Should
you elect to buy my book or not,
the following are things you need to know:
Pre-paid
Funerals:
Never
give any funeral practitioner any money for a pre-paid funeral.
Some states have laws designed to protect the consumer
when it comes to pre-paid funerals. Other states allow the funeral
home to keep up to 30% of any funds paid for a pre-need funeral
if you cancel the contract even though the funeral home has provided
you with nothing (you don‘t even have the benefit of keeping
any interest generated on the funds the funeral home has had control
of).
Of
the states that do regulate pre-need funeral funds and
what the funeral director must do to protect consumers (you) have
little time or money to properly oversee pre-need funeral accounts.
At this very moment I can document problem after problem nationwide
with pre-paid funerals. These are not just “big city”
problems. Situations that read almost exactly alike: a death occurs,
the family is relying on a pre-paid funeral, the funeral was paid
for years ago but the funeral director has long ago spent the
funds causing the family undue hardship in the midst of their
grief. Or perhaps the funeral home has been sold and the new owners
“know nothing” of the pre-paid funeral.
My
book will give you hints on how to safeguard your money
for your funeral and how to be in complete control of your money
should you decide to move. Keep your money, enjoy any interest
it may acquire and not worry about someone helping themselves
to your dollars.
Willed Body Programs:
Willed
body programs are where the deceased (or family members)
make the body of a loved one available for medical research when
the death occurs. Willed body programs are necessary for medical
schools to train the medical personnel for tomorrow. In my book
I mention body donation. At the time I wrote the text there had
been no problems that I had been aware of concerning such programs.
However recently some willed body programs (public and private)
have come under attack for the way in which the bodies are handled
and disposed of. One willed body program was found to be disarticulating
bodies that were awaiting cremation. This “program”
had no authorization to remove body parts from these bodies. The
remaining body pieces were often placed in a cardboard container
with parts from other bodies and cremated together as medical
waste.
Another
such program promised to return cremated remains (after
the medical research was completed) but failed to keep track of
the bodies (properly identify the bodies) and allegedly “lost”
one out of every four bodies donated. This “program”
was also illegally selling body parts and cremating both whole
bodies and body parts as medical waste.
Both
of the above mentioned willed body programs allegedly
lost bodies, disarticulated bodies with out authorization and
returned, often times, the incorrect cremated remains to families.
Check out any willed body program before you sign
up. As the tough questions such as:
1) Has your willed body program experienced any legal problems?
2) When was the last time your willed body program was audited?
3) What were the results of that audit?
4) Has any body or cremated remains ever been lost in your system?
5) How does your willed body program track the bodies used?
6) Who can I talk with that can verify any of the information
you have given me?
7) Should there be any difficulties or problems pertaining to
the use of my body or my loved ones body in your willed body program
what recourse is there?
